Ecuador

4.12. Total: 7823 km
El Chaco- Nueva Loja: 168 km

I am now in the Amazonas. It's very very hot and rainy- not at all the best climate for cycling.

3.12. Total: 7654 km
Tumbaco- El Chaco: 114 km

I had thought I was done with high mountains but today I had to cycle up to 4100 metres above sea level.High up it was rather cold and after a while it started raining heavily. The good thing about being in the tropics is that it's never too cold. It rains a lot, though :-(

Today I tested how resistant my smartphone is. I was riding at 40 km/h and was unable to dodge a pothole. My phone jumped out of my bag and fell hard to the ground. For a minute I thought I had lost him...but he survived ;-)

At the top of the pass (4078 metres ASL)

2.12. Total: 7540 km
Quito- Tumbaco: 25 km

Today I stayed at Casa del ciclista for the first time. I met loads of cyclists and liked chatting with them.

Ambato- Quito: 137 km

My host in Ambato told me that I would be cycling on a plain today. I had to cycle up 1500 metres high, though.

28.11. Total: 7376 km
Ambato- Ambato: 13 km

Today I went sightseeing in Ambato. My host invited two other guests, a man from Spain and his wife from Japan, and me to have breakfast. Everything was delicious and we had a great time and a nice conversation.

27.11. Total: 7363 km

Riobamba- Ambato: 65 km

Today I started at 2800 metres ASL and cycled up to 3650 metres. I'm planning to stay for two nights in Ambato. Tomorrow I'll go sightseeing.

The highest mountain in Ecuador: Mt. Chimborazo 6268 metres

25.11. Total: 7297 km
San Juan- Riobamba: 16 km.

My hosts in San Juan. They are very very nice people who really took care of me.

24.11. Total: 7281 km
Panza Redonda- San Juan: 64 km.

Today I cycled up to almost 3900 metres ASL which was quite hard. So so far the mountains in Ecuador aren't as beautiful as the ones in Peru.

23.11. Total: 7217 km.
El Triunfo- Panza Redonda: 104 km

I spent 2 days at Karla's. She is a Couchsurfer and she took a day off from work to show me around the place. Today I started cycling at 100 metres ASL and went up to 2600 metres. I'm planning to cycle to 3900 metres ASL tomorrow. It will be quite hard.

21.11. Total: 7113 km
Pasaje- El triunfo: 156 km

Last night I stayed at a Couchsurfer's who was also hosting a lady from Argentina who had travelled with her five-year-old daughter through Venezuela. She told me she'd enjoyed the journey very much but she warned me that it is difficult to get antibiotics and bottled water. She gave me some useful tips for my ride in Venezuela so everything should be fine.

Today I cycled again through banana plantations.

20.11. Total: 6957 km
Tumbes- Pasaje: 117 km

After 2 days resting, I haven't got a temperature any more and I'm in good shape. Today I crossed the border to Ecuador. What shocked me from Pasaje was there number of people who have drug problems. A pity really. I also saw a car accident in the city centre which a motorcyclist had died.

Today I cycled almost the whole day through banana plantations
