Guyana

01.02.2018. Total: 10870 km
Springlands- Moleson Creek: 17 km

At 3 am we caught the bus to Georgetown. The journey took 5 hours so at 8 we were at the embassy. We got our tourist visas for 30 dollars and travelled back to Springlands, collected our stuff and cycled to the border to take a ferry to Suriname.

Camping at the ferry station

We were just a couple of days too early. Now,  imagine if we had travelled back to Georgetown to get our visas when it was already perfectly possible to get them at the border! It would have been a lot worse than it actually was.

New Amsterdam- Springlands: 80 km

Our host in New Amsterdam introduced us to a German cyclist who then stayed with us . We had a good time and talked about our trips. When we told him that we were heading for Suriname, he asked us if we had got our visas at the embassy in Georgetown. My heart stopped- we hadn't. We checked information online hoping that we could get our visas at the border but no. I couldn't believe I had overlooked such important information. So we decided to drop our bags and bikes in a hotel and catch a bus to Georgetown at 3 am.

Georgetown- New Amsterdam: 130 km

My day today started with a stomach upset :-( so during the day I only had crackers and 4 litres of Coke to be able to ride 130 km.

Twelve km before New Amsterdam, there is a bridge that cannot be crossed by bike. We begged the police officer to let us cross but there was no way,  so we had to ask a lorry driver if he could give us a lift to the other side.

Villages have very funny names here

Linden- Georgetown: 95 km

Today we cycled again on a paved road. It was heaven. One tends to forget how much easier it is than cycling on dirt roads ;-)

26.01.2018. Total: 10548 km
Mabura- Linden: 130 km

Today we had the same difficulties as yesterday: rain and mud :-(. In the afternoon it started raining very heavily again. After having cycled 400 km on muddy dirt roads, riding the last 100 km to Georgetown on a paved road was a blessing. We did the last 20 when it was already dark, which was quite dangerous because of the state of the road. The ride was so bumpy that I lost my speedometer.

A snake!

Today we had to endure headwind and awful roads the whole day.

Brazil

02.03.2018. Total: 12110 km
Foz de Iguazu- Foz de Iguazu: 70 km

Today I went to the Iguazu waterfalls on the Brazilian side with my friends from Ecuador, Chile, Italy and Wales. On our way we saw a coral snake. The Italian guy told us that it was an extremely poisonous snake. Unfortunately I couldn't take a photo.

Coatis stole lots of things from my friends' bags. They took all the food as well as suncream! Luckily I took my bad with me.

The Italian guy had a flat tyre on our way back

28.02.2018. Total: 12040 km.
Foz de Iguazu- Foz de Iguazu: 120 km

I caught a bus from Belem to Foz. It was a sixty-one hour ride to cover 3300 km...In Foz I'm staying at La Casa del Ciclista where there are naturally many people that, like me, travel round the world by bike. There are cyclists from Chile, Wales, Italy, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. These cyclist, except for the Welsh guy and I, are travelling with practically no money. They do odd jobs and crafts or work in Circuses to pay for their trip as they go along. I also had the chance to see again two Colombian cyclists that I had met 4 months ago in Peru.

Casa del Ciclista.

Today I went to Parque Nacional Cataratas del Iguazú in Argentina to see the waterfalls from the Argentinian side. The view was breathtaking!

Look at that bird!

Monkeys and coatis can bite you, scratch you or steal your things. For your safety, do not feed them.

Belem-Belem: 20 km

Belem

Fortress in Belem. Museums were free today. ;-)

18.02.2018. Total: 11900 km
Macapa- Santana: 40 km.

Drastic change of plans. From Oiapoque to Macapa we decided to take a bus as the road is in very bad condition and it would pour down every single day. From Macapa we are planning to cross to Belem by boat.

People slept in hammocks on the boat

Probably because of things like this... :-D

This boat approached ours and passengers changed boats in the middle of the river

Regina- Oiapoque: 90 km

Back To Brazil. The border was closed because of the carnival so we had to take a ferry to cross the river and be able to get our passports stamped.

The camping site where we spent the night. We were warned to take good care of our stuff as this place was popular among youngsters who would come here to drink a lot.

Crossing the river

There were lots of dead snakes and monkeys on the road

22.01.2018. Total: 10159 km
Boa Vista ( Brazil)- Lethem (Guyana): 143 km

Today we set off at 5:30 am to avoid the heat. It was a very hard day as we had to put up with headwind the whole day. We were allowed to sleep in  a church and a very nice guy who works there brought us some food and water. Tomorrow we'll start cycling off road  for approximately 450 km into Guyana

20.01.2018 Total: 10015 km
Tres Coracoes- Boa Vista: 111 km

Last night we slept in a kind of refugee camp for Venezuelans. I had the feeling that at any time we would be robbed, but luckily nothing happened. As for the weather, it is very hot and the sun is stronger, which makes cycling more tiring.

Brasil

There are a lot of dead animals on the road. I even saw a dead crocodile!

I love Boa Vista

19.01.2018 Total: 9904 km

Santa Elena (Venezuela)- Tres Caracoes (Brazil)

Entering Brazil was similar to Venezuela. I had to queue  for 4 hours even though I had bribed my way ahead in the line.
